Paid actors, AI writing: How a new kind of video business cashed in on America’s divided politics

Over the last several months, a new generation of YouTube growth-hackers have flooded American politics with sensationalized, low-quality content, reaching millions of viewers with nearly identical videos taking aim at progressive politicians including Zohran Mamdani, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker. Notably, while the videos are presented as laypeople giving straight-to-camera ideological news recaps, they feature actors and spokespeople paid small amounts of money to read nearly identical scripts laced with misleading claims and outright falsehoods. They have at least 45 million views and 90,000 comments on YouTube as well as millions more impressions across social platforms like TikTok.

HHS Cancels Infant Mortality, Postpartum Grants to Focus on Sperm Counts, ED

HHS’s Office of Minority Health has cancelled 16 grants, several focused on maternal/infant health, telling grantees it’s pivoting to a focus on the root causes of infertility and promoting exercise. In canceling the maternal and infant mortality grants, HHS said those issues were no longer a priority for the office and grants would instead focus on “low sperm count, low testosterone levels and erectile dysfunction.”

Trump administration says a New York Times win in OpenAI lawsuit would “threaten national security” and hurt small newsrooms

The Department of Justice filing argues that large publishers will disproportionately benefit if AI companies have to pay to use copyrighted content. A court finding that training large language models on copyrighted material isn’t covered by “fair use,” the DOJ says, would “threaten national security,” “give a competitive advantage to foreign adversaries,” and thwart “creative and scientific progress while hindering American prosperity.” The filing acknowledges the Times’ claim that ChatGPT has been used to reproduce the Times’ copyright material in its entirety. But it dismisses that concern as irrelevant. The DOJ also argues that a ruling in favor of The New York Times would hurt small and independent news publishers. Another argument in the filing is that if OpenAI loses, all AI companies would need to pay licensing fees, disproportionately benefiting legacy media outlets due to “the sheer volume of their written publications.”

We’re Suing ChatGPT—And Trump Just Got Involved.

Mother Jones is suing ChatGPT for using their work without payment. This week, the administration went to the trouble of filing a brief in the lawsuit, an unusual step for the government to take at such an early stage in the process. The brief supports OpenAI, saying it’s a vital national interest for AI companies not to have to pay for content (with a dig about how that would just be a subsidy for “old mainstream media companies” anyway).
