In a Nation Armed to the Teeth, These Tiny Missteps Led to Tragedy

A workman knocking on the wrong door. A cheerleader mistaking another car for her own. Small errors can have large consequences in a nation bristling with guns. The U.S. has nearly 49,000 gun deaths in a year. Nearly 20 percent of American households bought a gun from March 2020 to March 2022, and about 5 percent of Americans bought a gun for the first time. At the same time, Republican states including Florida and Texas passed new laws allowing people to carry guns openly, or carry concealed weapons without a permit. More than 30 states also have “stand your ground” laws. Some have recently strengthened their “castle doctrine” laws, making it more difficult to prosecute homeowners who claim self-defense in a shooting. According to the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, shootings in which white people shot Black people were nearly three times as likely to be found “justified” compared with cases where white people shot other white people. There are no reliable local or national statistics for the use of firearms in self-defense, and the Harvard Injury Control Research Center, which studies crime data, found that weapons were actually more likely to be used in suicides, discharged accidentally, stolen or brandished in domestic disputes, than used to fend off an external attack.

Excerpts About AI from HarperCollins CEO Brian Murray’s Interview at the London Book Fair

“One of the things that’s fascinating about book publishing is that we’ve been in this intersection of culture and technology and law.” At the same time, “We’re entering the space now where it looks like machines can create content. And that’s going to challenge our copyright framework because our business is fundamentally founded on copyright and copyright is derived only from human creations, not from machine creations. So we’re entering this territory now where the foundation of our business and intellectual property and copyright needs to evolve to address what could be hybrid content.”

One type of hybrid content already being deployed within HarperCollins on a test basis is AI-assisted translation, including a project in which some Harlequin content is adapted into manga for the Japanese market, with AI-generated art based on photographs. “You can much more quickly create translation or images to help get your books to market more efficiently,” Murray said. Other use cases they have seen and/or are testing include “a lot in terms of text to speech” and “a lot in terms of creating first drafts of marketing copy.” They have also “seen good uses in summarizing manuscripts, and in using information to help us get the best metadata for our online retailers.”

Worth reading the whole interview for tidbits on the strike, the S&S sale (still possible HC may buy, he says), sustainability (a change in font saved 300M page of bibles), the publishing biz (incl. the need to raise book prices), and edits for classic works. #AI

Publishing’s Supply Chain Needs an Upgrade

HT @charabbott Via @brianoleary The supply chain we use for book publishing is a lot like an old house. Though the book industry has evolved with such innovations as online retailing, digital books, and new business models, our plumbing is largely the same as it was 15 years ago. It limits the ability of publishers, retailers, and other partners in the supply chain to improve discovery, sell more books, and reduce costs. To get the ball rolling, we will discuss these issues in detail at the @bisg annual meeting on April 28. Anyone from the industry is welcome to attend.

BookLooks, Framed as “Objective” Book Rating Resource, is really from Right-Wing Group Moms for Liberty

imageVia @veronikellymars What appears to be an objective measure of a book’s content, mirrored after movie ratings, is anything but. It is a tool developed by Moms For Liberty being used to push their agendas even further under the guise of protecting children. BookLooks has been the model for other book rating sites, including RatedBooks, which is aligned with the Utah-based book challenge group LaVerna in the Library. LaVerna in the Library–also known as Mary in the Library–has groups scattered throughout the country at the state level. Several books included in the still-tiny BookLooks database are titles that would never be purchased or included in a school library collection, such as The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Tantric Sex. It makes no sense for anyone with familiarity of how librarians read professional reviews and purchase materials to serve their school communities. What does make sense, though, is how creating such a database under the guise of objectivity could evoke knee-jerk reactions from parents

Applications for NYC’s free summer camps are open. Here’s how to register.

imageRegistration for New York City’s free summer programming for school-aged kids opened, providing families a summer child care option that can otherwise cost thousands of dollars. Unlike previous years where the first-come, first-serve registration created a mad dash for parents to secure one of the coveted spots, this year the city is promising a more equitable system for allocating the 110,000 available seats in the Summer Rising program. Children who attend school in the five boroughs are eligible for the program, including those who attend private and charter schools or are homeschooled.
